Today's book is one of my favorite and completly changed me when I read it in middle school forever ago. It's Lois Lowry's The Giver.
Jonas's world is
perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear or pain.
There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the Community.
When Jonas turns twelve, he is singled out to receive special training
from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and
pleasure of life. Now, it is time for Jonas to receive the truth. There
is no turning back.
In the
Denver-area case, Mark S. Hanson argued the book, read aloud in his
11-year-old daughter's class, was dangerous because of its portrayal of
suicide, euthanasia and infanticide in a neutral to positive light.
He thought that was especially bad in a state with the nation's
fifth-highest suicide rate and in the same school district as Columbine
High School. Although parents are required to be notified when
controversial materials are used in classrooms, Hanson said he was not
notified about The Giver because it was approved in 1994.
"A lot has changed in our community and some things should be re-evaluated," Hanson said.
He read the book after his daughter told him about the chapter in
which the twin boy is killed. He said his daughter was upset, but he
declined to discuss details.
In the book, Jonas is upset when he discovers infanticide. But Hanson
does not think other examples in the book are as clear-cut, including
the ending when Jonas saves a baby and rides off into a snowstorm
without warm clothes.

And the book, or should I say books, of the day are, drum roll please, the Harry Potter series!
It's hard to believe that these wonderful books are banned and challenge everywhere because people can look past certain things and see what they truly are, well written books with meaning and structure. This doesn't just go for Harry Potter, but for all books that unfortunately get this cruel punishment.

For those who are not aware of what Banned Book Week is, it is "an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted banning of books across the United States (from the ALA Website)."
During the next few days I'll be posting a few of my favorite banned books and a reader's choice at the end. Feel free to comment on how you feel about this issue!
ALSO! You have a chance to win one of the books that I'll be featuring!!

What was once the
western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually
at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the
Republic's wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy
being groomed for success in the Republic's highest military circles.
Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country's most wanted
criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.
From
very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths -
until the day June's brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the
prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a
race for his family's survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias's
death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of
what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their
country will go to keep its secrets.

Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.
Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone - one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship - tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn't do something soon, her parents will be next.
Now, Amy must race to unlock Godspeed's hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there's only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming

If you are like me, you have to read the book before the movie. I am a big supporter of this. If there is a movie that is based on a book or something else, which is basically almost EVERYTHING out there now, I HAVE to see the original or read the book first. Majority of the time the book is better than the movie. In my experience there is only a very small percentage where it's the opposite, but a VERY small percentile.

I'm super excited that Maureen is starting a new series up. Though her light and endering former books are amazing in their own right, I SUPER excited that she is diving into a darker world. I can not wait to endulge myself into another one of Maureen's wonderful worlds!

“Must he be here?” Gabriel growled to Tessa the second time he had nearly dropped a knife while handing it to her. He put a hand on her shoulder, showing her the sight line for the target she was aiming at a black circle drawn on the wall. She knew how much he would rather she were aiming at Will.

As the website says:
“The Man at the Counter” is a short film that tells the story of a young boy who spends the summer working at a coffee shop in a small town. One day, an old man comes into the store and orders a tall coffee. He smiles, leaves a tip and winks, and heads for door. On his way out, the boy notices that the man pockets a handful of sugar packets. The following day, the old man does the same thing; orders his coffee, leaves a tip, and takes a bunch of sugar packets. As this pattern continues, the boy grows more and more frustrated in trying to solve the mystery of the stolen sugar packets. Finally, the boy confronts the old man, and when the answer isn’t at all what he expected, he is forced to deal with some of life’s most basic questions.
Just by the trailer, and a little more insight from the synopsis, "Counter" looks like it's going to be one of those great short films that will make you question your own self. I'm particularly excited about seeing this film, mainly because of the reemergence of Tom Everett Scott (That Thing You Do!; "I AM SPARTICUS!"). In addition to Scott's appearance, we are also re-introduced to Ian Hyland, whom many of you may know from the dramedy, Spanglish, as The Boy. It's nice to see him in a even more maturing role than in Spanglish.
To stay up to date or to show support for this seemingly amazing short, be sure to check out TheManAtTheCounter(dot)com, or follow them on Twitter.
