Banned Book Week Hop/Giveaway: Day One

By 11:00 PM , , , , ,

Today is the first day of the Banned Book Week Hop hosted by the lovely ladies at I Read Banned Books and I'm A Reader, Not A Writer. To find more blogs participating click on the names of the blogs.

For those who are not aware of what Banned Book Week is, it is "an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted banning of books across the United States (from the ALA Website)."

During the next few days I'll be posting a few of my favorite banned books and a reader's choice at the end. Feel free to comment on how you feel about this issue!

ALSO! You have a chance to win one of the books that I'll be featuring!!

First book of the week: Looking for Alaska by John Green

Synopsis from John Green's website:

Miles Halter is fascinated by famous last words–and tired of his safe life at home. He leaves for boarding school to seek what the dying poet Francois Rabelais called the “Great Perhaps.” Much awaits Miles at Culver Creek, including Alaska Young. Clever, funny, screwed-up, and dead sexy, Alaska will pull Miles into her labyrinth and catapult him into the Great Perhaps.

This book is one of my all time favorites for it's heart wrenching, yet sometimes hilarious tale about teenagers in a boarding school. I could litterally quote it all the time and I do. I think everyone should read it. "Alaska" was challenged in New York in 2008 for graphic language and the sexual content. Even though it has these themes, it's ridiculous that it was even challenged.

Teenagers are exposed to a lot of things outside of the books that they read. So if a book comes along that mirrors real life, it is wrong, but if it really happens and not in a book it's okay. (That's seriously how my high school years went.)

  7. I can't believe I've never read Looking for Alaska. I've always heard great things about this one (despite some people's opinions on banning it). There are so many books to add to my TBR after BBW.

  12. It's incredible how many books are banned/challenged. This is a free country, right? Why do they think they have the authority to do that?

Anyways, thank you for the giveaway!
